Youth-led Community Wellbeing Outreach and Education

What is this project about?

This program will engage 400+ youth in research, discussion, and youth-led awareness campaigns/curriculum creation to educate themselves and their peers focused on the risks and outcomes associated with alcohol and drug/substance use. We will conduct local research through a literature and statistical review. We will interview key informants at Public Health, Justice related organizations, Mental Health organizations, the local hospital and Family Health team. We will compile and reflect this information back to local youth and Collective members. This will enable youth to learn more about the risks of alcohol and drug use in their lives and build their capacity to educate their peers and raise awareness in person and online. We will track and measure outcomes utilizing surveys with participants, qualitative interviews, and administrative data which will be turned into a report and communicated back to the community/participants. The learning will result in identification of solutions that can be implemented locally.

Why is this project important to the community?

Local research indicates high rates of alcohol use, high rates of substance use, and overdose in the general population in Prince Edward County. We want to work with youth to raise awareness, conduct research, and to engage youth on these topics. In Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. For example, Public Health data shows approximately 20% of males and 13% of females age 12+ reported binge drinking (five or more or four or more drinks on one occasion) at least once a month in the past year. This community data mirrors feedback we received from local youth. For example, at a 2024 Greater Than Youth Collective recreation related "Hackathon", where youth were brought together to identify solutions to provide input into municipal recreation policy and practices, youth identified few things for low income youth to do in this rural area that were not alcohol related.
