Track3 Volunteer and Athlete Transportation Program

What is this project about?

Every winter, three coach bus routes carry volunteers and athletes from three pickup points across the Greater Toronto Area to Track3's ski programs at one of Craigleith, Alpine, or Beaver Valley Ski Clubs. Far more volunteers ride the bus than athletes: roughly 60 volunteer instructors take the bus each week, compared to about 21 athletes. Many of these volunteers live over two hours from the hill and would not be able to commit to a full season of early Saturday and Sunday mornings without it. As one longtime volunteer, Sandra, puts it: "Having bus transportation makes volunteering possible and allows me to commit year after year... Like most volunteers and athletes, I live 2 hours away from the ski hill and knowing I can relax on the bus ride gets me ready for a great day on the ski hill." This funding helps keep that bus running for the 2026 to 2027 season, protecting the volunteer base that Track3's entire program model depends on.

Why is this project important to the community?

Track3's volunteers span the full range of ages, from high school students as young as 14 to retirees in their 70s. Track3 maintains a minimum 2:1 volunteer-to-athlete ratio, to ensure safety and mentorship. Many of these volunteers live far from the ski hills and travel in winter driving conditions, often before sunrise, for two hours or more each way. The cost of gas and wear on a personal vehicle, combined with the physical demands of the work itself, adds up over a full season and is asking a lot of our volunteers who generously give their weekends to supporting kids with disabilities. The bus removes that barrier: volunteers arrive rested rather than stressed from a long drive in poor road conditions, ready to give athletes their full attention. When the bus runs, Track3 retains a wide range of volunteers, from teenagers to retirees, who make adaptive sport education possible for children across the region.
