Volunteers are the backbone of BBBS agencies across Simcoe County—Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie & District (BBBSOB), North Simcoe (BBBSNS), and Orillia & District (BBBSOD). However, we’ve observed a concerning decline in volunteerism and increased volunteer burnout. Many volunteers are struggling with the emotional toll of supporting vulnerable populations, navigating complex relationships, and managing crises with limited resources.
To address these challenges, Thrive Together: A Wellness & Empowerment Series aims to empower existing volunteers and reinvigorate volunteerism across communities in Simcoe County.
Key Challenges Facing Volunteers:
Volunteer Decline: Balancing personal responsibilities with the emotional demands of supporting at-risk individuals makes it difficult for many to commit to long-term volunteer roles.
Volunteer Burnout: The complexity of volunteer work often leads to feelings of overwhelm and fatigue, resulting in lower retention and effectiveness.
How the Thrive Together: A Wellness & Empowerment Series Addresses These Challenges:
Empowering Volunteers through Learning and Support: The series offers targeted learning opportunities in crisis management, active listening, boundaries, and difficult conversations, providing volunteers with tools to handle complex situations confidently.
Prioritizing Self-Care to Combat Burnout: Wellness practices such as meditation, movement, reflection, and stress-relief techniques will help volunteers recharge and build resilience, reducing burnout and extending their engagement.
Strengthening Volunteerism within BBBS Agencies and the Community:
Creating a Ripple Effect: By enhancing the skills and well-being of volunteers, the program amplifies their impact on vulnerable populations. Volunteers will also share knowledge and foster stronger community connections.
Reinvigorating Volunteer Recruitment: By prioritizing volunteer well-being, the program positions volunteerism as a rewarding and sustainable way to contribute, attracting new and returning volunteers.
Broader Impact on Community Learning and Engagement:
Supporting Volunteerism Beyond BBBS: The skills gained from this series are transferable to other community service roles, increasing engagement across Simcoe County.
Strengthening Community Resilience: A well-supported volunteer base is better equipped to respond to challenges and help vulnerable populations, contributing to a more resilient community.
