The IlluminART Project will transform the Port of Orillia into a permanent outdoor art gallery and free learning space. Large illuminated lampshades on light poles will showcase transparent artworks by local artists, merging public lighting with creative expression.
The project removes barriers to arts participation, offering inclusive access for people of all ages, abilities, and incomes. It will highlight works from Indigenous, immigrant, and marginalized artists, embedding local history, Indigenous knowledge, and community stories to spark reflection and cultural understanding.
Biannual exhibitions will keep the gallery dynamic and engaging, extending learning beyond museum walls into everyday public space.
An interactive IlluminART Explorer Challenge will deepen engagement through QR codes linking to artist interviews, cultural stories, and reflection questions. Visitors can earn digital “Explorer Badges” in themes like Indigenous Knowledge, Community Voices, and Art & Innovation, unlocking digital rewards and encouraging repeat visits. Each exhibition cycle will feature new artworks and challenges, creating sustained learning throughout the year.
