The IlluminART project

What is this project about?

The IlluminART Project will transform the Port of Orillia into a permanent outdoor art gallery and free learning space. Large illuminated lampshades on light poles will showcase transparent artworks by local artists, merging public lighting with creative expression.

The project removes barriers to arts participation, offering inclusive access for people of all ages, abilities, and incomes. It will highlight works from Indigenous, immigrant, and marginalized artists, embedding local history, Indigenous knowledge, and community stories to spark reflection and cultural understanding.

Biannual exhibitions will keep the gallery dynamic and engaging, extending learning beyond museum walls into everyday public space.

An interactive IlluminART Explorer Challenge will deepen engagement through QR codes linking to artist interviews, cultural stories, and reflection questions. Visitors can earn digital “Explorer Badges” in themes like Indigenous Knowledge, Community Voices, and Art & Innovation, unlocking digital rewards and encouraging repeat visits. Each exhibition cycle will feature new artworks and challenges, creating sustained learning throughout the year.

Project Impacts
• Provide free, equitable access to art and cultural learning.
• Offer accessible educational experiences for vulnerable groups.
• Celebrate diversity, amplify underrepresented voices, and strengthen community pride.

By blending art, history, technology, and education, IlluminART transforms Orillia’s waterfront into a “living learning space” that fosters awareness, inclusivity, and civic connection.

Why is this project important to the community?

Orillia, known as the Sunshine City, is a regional tourism destination anchored by its lakes, waterways, trails, and cultural attractions. Despite its reputation as a creative hub with several public art pieces, Orillia’s downtown lacks functional public gathering spaces where residents and visitors can access arts learning freely and equitably. Feedback from the community consistently points to a desire for more public art—particularly works that are site-responsive, connect with Orillia’s natural geography, and reflect seasonal change, pathways, and the city’s waterfront character.

At the same time, there are growing disparities in access to the arts, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Financial, transportation, and mobility barriers limit opportunities for many residents to engage with traditional museum or gallery settings. The IlluminART Project directly addresses these challenges by bringing art into the heart of downtown Orillia through an outdoor illuminated gallery that is open, visible, and accessible to all as a learning space.

The use of QR codes and digital technologies provides additional entry points to learning, connecting viewers with artists. By blending public art with learning and interpretive programming, IlluminART creates meaningful opportunities for the community to engage with culture in accessible and inclusive ways. Residents and visitors will not only see art, but also experience, interpret, and share it—fostering creativity, dialogue, and a stronger sense of belonging across Orillia.

The IlluminART Project enriches community life by transforming Port Orillia into a dynamic learning space. Regularly changing exhibitions give residents and visitors fresh opportunities to connect with local talent while celebrating Orillia’s natural and cultural assets together.
