The Forge at RPL : Forging Ideas, Connecting Community

What is this project about?

The Forge will be Renfrew Public Library’s new makerspace — a vibrant, inclusive hub where creativity, technology, and community come together. Inspired by Renfrew’s heritage of craftsmanship and innovation, The Forge will offer a modern space designed to help people of all ages learn new skills, share ideas, and bring their imaginations to life.

At The Forge, residents will have access to tools and technology such as 3D printers, sewing and embroidery machines, design software, robotics kits, and multimedia equipment. More importantly, they will find opportunities to connect — through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative projects that celebrate creativity, lifelong learning, and community spirit.

Guided by the Library’s mission of discovery, inspiration, connection, and inclusion, The Forge will empower learners, makers, and dreamers to explore new possibilities. Whether creating art, repairing a household item, recording a podcast, or experimenting with digital design, The Forge will be a welcoming place to forge ideas, forge skills, and forge community.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Forge will play a vital role in fostering creativity, learning, and connection in the Town of Renfrew and surrounding townships. In a region where rates of child poverty and financial hardship are higher than the provincial average, equitable access to technology, tools, and learning opportunities is essential. The Forge will ensure that every resident — regardless of income, age, or ability — has a welcoming place to explore new ideas, develop practical and digital skills, and build confidence in a rapidly changing world.

By blending Renfrew’s strong tradition of craftsmanship with modern innovation, The Forge will help bridge generations and reduce barriers to participation. Local residents will be able to learn hands-on skills, explore creative outlets, and collaborate on projects that celebrate local identity and ingenuity.

For children and youth, it will spark curiosity and provide access to resources that support STEAM learning and future job readiness. For adults, it will encourage creativity, lifelong learning, and entrepreneurial exploration. For seniors, it will offer opportunities to share their experience, stay connected, and learn new technologies.

Ultimately, The Forge will be a community equalizer — a space where creativity and opportunity are accessible to all. It will strengthen community bonds, foster inclusion, and reflect what the Library does best: bringing people together to discover, create, and connect.
