The Beacon Youth Centre

What is this project about?

Northumberland Youth Unlimited believes in the hope and potential of every young person. Our project in Brighton supports the development of youth emotional and mental health by addressing their physical needs and fostering supportive relationships between the youth and adult volunteers or workers. The Beacon Youth Centre aims to meet the needs of local youth through its lunch program, which serves 5,300 young people annually, and its Thursday evening drop-in space, which serves 850 youth each year. According to a report by Statistics Canada, 25.5% of people live in food-insecure households, marking the third consecutive increase since 2022. Food insecurity is recognized as an adverse childhood experience, linked to increased anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts in youth and young adults. Experiencing more than three adverse childhood experiences can lead to toxic stress syndrome and other negative effects on the physical and mental health of youth. The lunch and evening programs at the Beacon aim to mitigate these experiences by providing a warm meal, a safe environment, and opportunities for youth to interact with caring adults.

Why is this project important to the community?

Rural youth often face challenges in accessing food and recreational programs due to transportation issues. Having programs located within their own community, within walking distance, eliminates this barrier.
