Sunderland Memorial Arena Expansion and Renovation Project. The name of fundraising campaign is “Make The Assist”

What is this project about?

The project is to make overdue improvements to the Sunderland Memorial Arena. The improvements include:
• Expanding the size of the ice surface from 70’ x 170’ to 78’ x 190’ to facilitate minor ice hockey and ringette games and tournaments, figure skating, sledge hockey and public skating
• Installing a new refrigeration system to support the expanded ice surface
• Adding six new dressing rooms, including two that are fully accessible for sledge hockey players to facilitate diverse participants including women’s and youth teams.
• Building a new Zamboni room and related storage area.
• Renovating the public lobby and washrooms.

This project ensures the arena can host regional tournaments, provide inclusive access, and remain a hub for sports, events, and community programs.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Sunderland Memorial Arena is the heart of our community, used for sports, events, school programs, and more. However, it is urgently in need of critical renovations to meet modern safety, accessibility, and functional standards.

The current ice surface is undersized, limiting usage and creating scheduling constraints; an expanded surface is essential to support rising demand from user groups.

Outdated and inadequate dressing rooms restrict our ability to host tournaments and fully welcome diverse participants, including women’s and youth teams.

Population growth in our community is placing significant pressure on existing recreational infrastructure, making expansion a necessity.

The arena serves as a vital, year-round hub for sports, local events such as Sunderland Fall Fair, school programs, and other community gatherings - it’s more than a rink; it’s our community hub.
