STEM Program For Children & Youth

What is this project about?

The STEM Program for Children and Youth is a skill-development educational initiative by Afro Canadian Development Inc. that provides free, hands-on learning in Coding and Robotics to children and youth aged 6–18 from underserved and low-income communities across the Greater Toronto Area.

The program aims to bridge the digital divide by offering equitable access to high-quality STEM education, empowering participants with essential 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and digital literacy. Through weekly in-person sessions delivered by our expert partners - MakerKids and Ultimate Coders - students learn Scratch and Python programming, as well as robotics and circuit design using Arduino technology.

Ultimately, this project is about inspiring the next generation of innovators - helping young people from marginalized communities discover their potential in science and technology while preparing them for future education and career pathways. By fostering curiosity and confidence, the STEM Program builds community capacity and contributes to a more equitable and tech-literate future for all.

Why is this project important to the community?

This project is vital to our community because it addresses a growing digital and educational gap that disproportionately affects children and youth from low-income, newcomer, and racialized families. Many of these families face financial barriers that limit their access to technology and extracurricular learning opportunities leaving their children at a disadvantage in a world that increasingly depends on digital skills.

By providing free, high-quality STEM education, the program empowers young people to develop essential skills in coding, robotics, and problem-solving. It also gives parents and families hope that their children can pursue meaningful careers in technology regardless of their socio-economic background.

For our community, this project is not just about teaching technology - it’s about breaking cycles of poverty, promoting equity in education, and strengthening local capacity. By investing in the digital literacy of our children and youth today, we are building a stronger, more resilient, and future-ready community for tomorrow.
