SNP Food Initiative

What is this project about?

Student Nutrition Programs are free and open to all elementary and high school students, regardless of socio-economic status. These programs provide safe, nutritious, and personally acceptable food to optimize learning. Studies show that well-nourished students demonstrate higher concentration, improved behavior, and better information retention. By ensuring that healthy food options are readily available, we support student achievement, enhance learning, and strengthen education and literacy.
Food For Kids City of Kawartha Lakes has been working to connect Student Nutrition Programs with local farmers and businesses to create an opportunity to bulk purchase fresh, healthy, and nutritious food for SNPs. If successful, this funding would be used to support additional bulk purchases for SNPs, at no additional cost for the schools.

Why is this project important to the community?

Student nutrition is no longer a targeted program. Being universal creates a welcoming environment for all students to access nutritious food. By removing any financial barriers, children who are food insecure will not feel stigmatized. All children will benefit from accessing nutritious food as well as secondary benefits such as having positive interactions with caring adults, positive interactions with their peers, demonstrating food can foster community.
