Project Overview
This project addresses the lack of real-world opportunities for language practice for privately sponsored newcomers. The Sit and Chat-English Practice Circle will offer participants opportunities to use classroom knowledge with community volunteers.
One-on-One Approach
- Participants choose topics they need to practice, from basic conversation to specific scenarios like parent-teacher meetings or workplace discussions.
- Each participant works individually with a volunteer for focused support.
- Volunteers rotate, so participants interact with 2-3 people, exposing them to varied speech patterns common in Canada.
Expected Outcomes
- Reduce barriers newcomers face due to limited language practice.
- Build language skills needed for meaningful employment.
- Prepare newcomers for important conversations with employers, educators, landlords, and medical professionals.
While conversation circles are available in our community, we identified the need for sessions held during evenings and weekends to enhance accessibility.
Our program's emphasis on one-on-one interactions, volunteer rotation, and participant-driven discussion topics offers a distinctive model for language practice, addressing specific areas that are most relevant to newcomers.
Our participants will be adults with a focus on those who lack opportunity to practice English outside the classroom (those who are unemployed, stay at home mums, 19-20 year olds who are not in school)
