Safe to Tell: It Takes Courage to Speak Up. It Shouldn’t Take Luck to Be Heard.

What is this project about?

Imagine a child finally finding the courage to tell someone they're being hurt.

They turn to a teacher. A coach. A neighbour. Maybe even you.

Would you know what to say? Would you recognize the warning signs? Would you know how to help?

For a child experiencing abuse, exploitation or violence, the response of one trusted adult can make an extraordinary difference.

It takes courage for a child to speak up. It shouldn't take luck to be heard.

Safe to Tell is a community education initiative from the Child Advocacy Centre of Simcoe/Muskoka that will help ordinary people become the trusted adults children need.

Through free workshops, practical resources and community partnerships, we will teach parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, volunteers and neighbours how to recognize warning signs of abuse and exploitation, respond safely when a child shares something concerning, and connect children with the right support.

Young people will help shape the resources because adults need to understand what children actually need when they ask for help.

We will bring this education into accessible community spaces, including libraries and other gathering places, with a focus on communities where distance and limited services can make finding help harder.

This isn't about turning everyone into a child protection expert. It's about making sure more adults know how to listen, believe, protect and act.

Because the next child who needs help could turn to any one of us.

Let's make sure we're ready.

Why is this project important to the community?

Child abuse doesn't only happen somewhere else. It happens in communities like ours, sometimes behind familiar doors, involving children we know and care about.

And it doesn't always look the way we expect.

A child may not have the words to explain what's happening. They may be frightened, confused, ashamed or worried about what will happen if they tell someone.

Sometimes the signs are subtle. Sometimes a child tests the waters with a small disclosure before sharing more.

What happens next matters.

At the Child Advocacy Centre of Simcoe/Muskoka, we supported more than 800 children, youth and family members in 2025–2026. Behind every number is a person who deserves safety, dignity and support.

But specialized services cannot be everywhere at once.

Across our region, rural distances and barriers to accessing services make knowledgeable, trusted adults especially important.

Imagine what could change if more teachers recognized the warning signs. If more coaches knew how to respond. If more parents understood grooming and exploitation. If more neighbours knew where to turn when something didn't feel right.

Safe to Tell will put practical knowledge into the hands of everyday people.

We cannot expect children to carry the responsibility of protecting themselves.

The adults around them need to be ready.

A safer community begins when we all understand our role in protecting children.
