Refreshing the Technology Centre at the Whitestone Public Library

What is this project about?

The Technology Centre at the Whitestone Public Library will improve access to Internet, technology, and training in our rural community! We have a beautiful new space, but there is a need to update our public access computers, tablets, and other equipment. We would like to add more makerspace-style elements, such as robotics kits and a 3D printer, to our Technology Centre to accelerate hands-on learning and engage our residents, both seasonal and year-round. The Whitestone Public Library & Technology Centre is the hub of the community. Upgrading and expanding our Technology Centre will help move the community forward by providing an innovative and creative space within our existing community hub.

Why is this project important to the community?

In June 2021, the newly renovated and expanded Whitestone Public Library & Technology Centre opened its doors to the public. This improved facility gives us the space to expand our offerings. We provide a safe location and resources for individuals, non-profits, and businesses to enrich their lives without travelling to a larger centre.

Whitestone is an Internet desert. Fiberoptic and cable internet do not exist in this rural area, and alternatives such as satellite internet are expensive and inaccessible to many. Income in Whitestone is below average. By providing free access to computers, software, and technology training we help facilitate deeper connectivity to bridge the acute economic and digital divide within our rural community.
