Powering Knowledge – Generator for Perth East Public Library

What is this project about?

The Perth East Public Library Board is working towards purchasing a generator for the library building for backup power when the hydro goes out. In addition to providing access to resources and programs, the library acts as a heating and cooling space for many in the community, however, the library is unable to remain open when the hydro goes out resulting in programs being cancelled and the public having to leave the facility.

Many individuals use the library space to access resources, materials, computers, Wi-Fi, use the space, and connect with others.

The project “Powering Knowledge" will allow the library to remain open to the public and staff when hydro outages occur - allowing the staff to continue serving the public.

Why is this project important to the community?

The public library building is a well-used community space; this project is important to our community because a generator will provide hydro for the library, allowing the library to remain open during power outages. Members of the public who are seeking relief from weather, need hydro to charge devices, have internet access, etc. will be able to do so at the library. When power outages occur, the library has to cancel programs, access to computers and Wi-Fi is unavailable, and the library has to close two hours after hydro is lost. With the aid of a generator library staff will be able to continue providing services to the community, and the public would have access to programs and resources.
