School Council's overall goal is to replace the aging playground equipment. The playground equipment was installed at Baltimore Public School in the 1990s. At 30 years old, the equipment has far surpassed the typical lifespan of 15-20 years. The current structures provide limited accessibility and agility opportunities to our students during active play. Due to the length of time the equipment has been utilized, there are many pieces that are no longer to code and many of the components (such as slides) have been taken due to safety concerns. Newer equipment is designed to prioritize safety, accessibility, and engaging play opportunities for children.
Our overall Playground Revitalization project is a multi-phase project, with phase 1 already complete. We are seeking funds for phase 2 through the L.E.A. F. initiative.
Phase 1 - involved the replacement of a swing set that was urgently decommissioned due to safety. Through School Council, we successfully raised the funds to replace this swing set, which has been installed and students and community are using it daily.
Phase 2 - Replacement of one of two playground structure onsite. Students have voted on the playground design and we are in the fundraising process.
Phase 3 - Replacement of second playground structure onsite. Fundraising to commence once Phase 2 funding levels are reached.
School council does not receive any funding from the Ministry of Education, School Board or the School for improvements or construction of outdoor playground equipment, all funds raised are done through fundraising initiatives and are School Councils sole responsibility.
