Playground Revitalization

What is this project about?

School Council's overall goal is to replace the aging playground equipment. The playground equipment was installed at Baltimore Public School in the 1990s. At 30 years old, the equipment has far surpassed the typical lifespan of 15-20 years. The current structures provide limited accessibility and agility opportunities to our students during active play. Due to the length of time the equipment has been utilized, there are many pieces that are no longer to code and many of the components (such as slides) have been taken due to safety concerns. Newer equipment is designed to prioritize safety, accessibility, and engaging play opportunities for children.

Our overall Playground Revitalization project is a multi-phase project, with phase 1 already complete. We are seeking funds for phase 2 through the L.E.A. F. initiative.

Phase 1 - involved the replacement of a swing set that was urgently decommissioned due to safety. Through School Council, we successfully raised the funds to replace this swing set, which has been installed and students and community are using it daily.

Phase 2 - Replacement of one of two playground structure onsite. Students have voted on the playground design and we are in the fundraising process.

Phase 3 - Replacement of second playground structure onsite. Fundraising to commence once Phase 2 funding levels are reached.

School council does not receive any funding from the Ministry of Education, School Board or the School for improvements or construction of outdoor playground equipment, all funds raised are done through fundraising initiatives and are School Councils sole responsibility.

Why is this project important to the community?

"Learning While Caring" is the motto of the Baltimore Code of Conduct, which reflects the school's vision to promote a safe and caring environment.
Play is considered an essential occupation for development in children. The provision of a new playground structure will promote social and community engagement for various aged children within the Baltimore Public School community and the larger group of local children in the Hamilton Township.

The improvements to the playgrounds at Baltimore Public School will promote active, healthy lifestyles for students and all families in the community. Further, a variety of structures and equipment in a playground are paramount for inclusivity, and the development of gross motor skills and vestibular skills.

We are not only a school, we are a community hub. We connect families - through events and friendships - we provide employment and volunteer opportunities, we provide a space for childcare, a space for School Council to meet and we serve as a space that can be used by our community - We currently rent to YMCA, and have rental agreements with other groups who use our space outside of school hours. Our project will allow for a new playground to be available to over 1,500 children of all ages within our growing community.
