Play It Forward

What is this project about?

St. Mary Catholic School Council has been fundraising for 8 years, with the goal of replacing the existing wooden playground structure that is 18 years old with something more modern and relevant to the school community. More than ever, our youth need opportunities to explore and participate in activities that encourage positive social interactions and physical activity.
Our young community members often state that they do not know what to do when they are outdoors and St. Mary school is committed to providing a variety of options that appeal to all children. Our hope is to put in a structure that is low to the ground but provides access to and promotes climbing, balance, agility, and co-operative skills.
As part of our commitment, our school has already raised funds for the following improvements:
New soccer goals
New volleyball court
Constant repairs to the existing playground structure to keep it within safety regulations
In addition, we consider accessibility for all community members as an essential component of our playground improvements. Not only do we have students that require modifications to our playground due to mobility issues, but we have community members as well.

Why is this project important to the community?

Our school is located in a rural community within the Haldimand/Alnwick township. Our school motto is: Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. Take care of our school.
This mantra reflects our vision of creating an environment in which our youth learn the importance of their own physical and mental health, as well as the value of prosocial activities that lead to the betterment of our entire school community. The addition of a new play structure will further promote this vision, and extend our positive influence to the entire Grafton community. One just has to attend a community event in which our school is the venue, to see the relationships, connections, and support that result from bringing our community together. We are more than a school, we are a community hub.
In a broader sense, the PVNCC School Board vision states that we are “Rooted in community, formed in faith, ready to change the world.” We envision our students as the leaders of our future, and by instilling the importance of a healthy lifestyle, they will be the ones who promote growth in this area for themselves and our families in the community.
