Peterborough Lawn Bowling 125th Anniversary – Grounds improvements

What is this project about?

2026 is the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club's 125th Anniversary and we would like to showcase the club. We are looking to upgrade the Lawn bowling grounds with new surrounding boards. These boards are rather important as the provide safety and aesthetics to the grounds. We have two green that are approximately 120ft x 120ft in diameter and the boards need to be replaced for both rinks. Even though our board and volunteers do most of the work on the rinks, this would need to be completed by a contractor. With the media attention and the public interest next year we would like to upgrade by the end of June

Why is this project important to the community?

Lawn bowling offers a surprisingly rich avenue for community involvement, blending sport, social connection, and civic engagement. Here's how it plays out:
🌿 Ways Lawn Bowling Builds Community
1. Social Inclusion & Intergenerational Bonding
- Lawn bowling clubs often welcome members of all ages and abilities.
- Seniors, youth, and people with disabilities can participate together, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
- We host “Try It” days or open houses to introduce newcomers in a friendly, low-pressure environment.
2. Volunteering & Leadership
- Members often volunteer to maintain greens, organize events, or coach beginners.
- Clubs offer leadership roles—committee positions, event planning, fundraising—that build skills and strengthen local ties.
3. Local Events & Fundraisers
- Clubs host tournaments, charity matches, and community BBQs that raise money for local causes.
- These events attract spectators and non-players, turning the club into a hub of neighborhood activity.
4. Partnerships with Schools & Organizations
- Some clubs partner with schools to offer youth programs or PE alternatives.
- Others collaborate with retirement homes or disability support groups to provide accessible recreation.
5. Cultural Exchange
- In multicultural communities, lawn bowling can be a bridge across cultures.
- Clubs may host themed nights or international tournaments that celebrate diversity.
