Orillia Skatepark at Foundry Park

What is this project about?

The Orillia Skateparkers have lobbied and fundraised for 8 years for a new skatepark in Orillia and it is now close to becoming a reality. The City of Orillia has provided the site for the park and has agreed to fund the project with a proposed start date of May 2026. Due to budget constraints, some of the features that provide the most equity and inclusion for community members may not be added to the design and the Skateparkers are fundraising to ensure these features are added to the new park to ensure everyone can enjoy it. Our most pressing requests are shade structures, water fountains, and lighting.

Why is this project important to the community?

Skateboarding is a vibrant, inclusive, and growing sport. It is adaptable to any skill level. Skateboarding is a relatively low cost sport that allows people to learn at their own pace, with proven mental health benefits. A new park will allow new skaters to learn something new and more seasoned skaters space to practice their sport safely. It will provide a safe place for youth and teens to gather. The Raccoon Skate Club with its 30 -40 weekly members will now have a safe and large enough space to skate together. The park, being attached the Recreation Centre, will offer a place for the city to provide camps, lessons and programming, and for our local skate shops to contests and skate meet ups, keeping the community engaged. It will also offer a spot to hold skateboarding competitions, bringing visitors to our great city. The park will be used by other sports as well, it will be great for BMXers, rollerbladers and rollerskaters, wheelchair users and scooters.
