Natural Play Space for Little Explorers

What is this project about?

We are expanding our not-for-profit childcare centre and have finished renovating an existing community space to offer additional, affordable childcare spaces within our community. As part of our expansion, we will construct a natural, accessible play space for use by the children at the new site Little Explorers. Children are at a crucial stage in their development where outdoor play helps with their physical, emotional and cognitive independence. Outdoor play spaces encourage children to explore the natural environment, use their coordination, balance and strength, and demonstrate risk analysis. Changes in weather, blooming flowers, bugs, fallen sticks etc. are all opportunities for children to engage and explore their natural environment while using their imagination. These are unique experiences the children have by being able to play outdoors. To encourage as much of this developmental play we want to create as natural a play space as possible for children at Little Explorers.

Why is this project important to the community?

We have completed a natural play space renovation to our existing childcare site at Little Learners and have seen the benefits it offers the children. This funding will allow us to create a safe and natural play space at our new childcare centre Little Explorers. It has been proven that natural playgrounds increase children physical activity, improves their relationships, increases their recognition and ability to assess risk, decreases sick time and stress. The use of natural elements encourages risk evaluation skills by the children which is an important element of development. Natural elements provide a variety of textures, stimulate imagination and creativity and exercise children’s gross-motor skills by the children which is an important element of development.
