Music Care

What is this project about?

The Music Care project is about empowering our Recreation staff & providing a meaningful Music Care program to the residents in our LTCSS locations. Providing the necessary resources, training & equipment helps us express to our staff that we recognize the importance of the Recreation role in providing the programs offered to our residents.
There are many benefits to providing music care programs, & our residents have continuously requested us to offer music related programs. Familiar music can trigger memories, which is especially beneficial for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Listening to, singing, or playing music stimulates multiple areas of the brain, improving attention, problem-solving, & verbal memory. Music also activates widespread brain regions, helping to maintain & even build new neural connections. It lowers cortisol levels & boosts dopamine, promoting relaxation & emotional balance, which helps reduce stress & anxiety. Upbeat or calming music can lift spirits & ease feelings of sadness or agitation. Music provides a nonverbal outlet for emotions, making it especially helpful for those with communication challenges.
Music care will encourage movement & dance, which can improve coordination, flexibility, & muscle strength. It can also serve as a distraction from pain & promote rhythmic breathing aiding in relaxation. Most importantly, group music activities foster interaction & a sense of belonging. Singing & musical engagement stimulate language centers, improving verbal skills. It’s a program that people of all abilities can enjoy.
By providing training to our staff, we empower them to deliver new & meaningful programs to the residents. This includes engaging music-based activities such as Bell Choirs, Boom whackers, and Ukulele programs tailored to various abilities. Music programs consistently receive the highest attendance, & expanding the variety of offerings will help ensure our residents remain connected, stimulated & engaged.

Why is this project important to the community?

The County of Simcoe is designated as an age-friendly community by the World Health Organization (WHO) & is included in the prestigious global network of age-friendly cities & communities. To understand the evolving needs of our community, Simcoe County has worked alongside partners to identify key priorities & strategies that promote inclusion, respect, & accessibility for older adults. This commitment is reflected in our comprehensive approach to creating an age-friendly environment, where every resident – regardless of age – feels valued & empowered. The County of Simcoe respects older adults as valued members of our communities. With our Age-friendly Vision & Positive Aging Strategy, we look forward to continuing to strengthen our programs & services to build strong & healthy communities.

We take great pride in offering a wide variety of Therapeutic Recreation programs that run daily at our four Long-Term Care & Seniors Services Campuses. Recreation programming is available seven days a week to ensure residents have consistent access to activities that support the five key domains of therapeutic recreation: physical, social, cognitive, emotional, & spiritual.

These programs are designed to enhance overall quality of life, promote well-being, & help residents maintain their independence. We recognize that social isolation can have serious health consequences, including increased risks to physical, mental, & cognitive health. Our commitment to daily, inclusive programming is a proactive approach to mitigating these risks.

Our grant application for the Music Care training program aligns with several of these therapeutic domains. Music Care offers meaningful engagement opportunities that support cognitive, emotional, physical, & social well-being. It is a vital component of our programming, accessible to residents of all abilities across our campuses, & plays an important role in fostering connection, joy, and holistic wellness within our community.
