Mountsfield Inclusive Playground & Community Space

What is this project about?

We’re building an inclusive, accessible playground at Mountsfield Public School that welcomes every child and strengthens our Old South community. Serving 530+ students during the school day and neighbourhood families after hours, the new space will feature barrier-free surfacing, inclusive swings, sensory play panels, climbers and slides for varied abilities, shaded seating, and calmer “quiet-zone” nooks to support neurodiverse learners. The playground will promote physical literacy, social-emotional learning, and belonging—values that define Mountsfield, one of TVDSB’s few congregated gifted sites with a long history of community engagement. L.E.A.F. funding will help us replace aging equipment with modern, safe, and accessible structures so more children can play together. The space will be open to the community after school, on weekends, and in summer, becoming a vibrant hub for connection, wellness, and play.

Why is this project important to the community?

Mountsfield sits at the heart of London’s Old South, serving 530+ students and countless neighbourhood families who use the school grounds after hours. Our current play space is aging and not fully accessible, which means some children are left on the sidelines—especially those with mobility needs or sensory differences. An inclusive, barrier-free playground changes that. It creates a safe, welcoming place for kids to build friendships, practice problem-solving, and strengthen their bodies and minds through play. It also gives families a free, close-to-home gathering space that builds connection across generations. For many local families without large yards or easy access to recreation programs, this playground will be their daily hub. Investing here strengthens community health, belonging, and pride - values Mountsfield has championed for decades.
