Library-to-Go

What is this project about?

The Library-To-Go project aims to enhance access to library services in the northern area of Ramara Township through the installation of a library vending machine. This innovative service model will provide residents with convenient access to both adult and children’s books, encouraging literacy and lifelong learning in an underserved, rural part of our community.
Currently, the Ramara Township Public Library operates two branches, located in Atherley and Brechin. As a result, residents in the northern region face significant barriers to library access, with the closest branch being nearly 20 kilometres away. While the Library has made efforts to reach this area through outreach programming, it has proven challenging to provide consistent access to library materials and services.

By introducing Library-To-Go, we will bridge this service gap and promote equitable access to information, reading materials, and educational resources. The vending machine will enable residents to borrow and return items easily, fostering engagement across all age groups. This initiative will also encourage more community members to obtain a free library card, removing transportation and distance as barriers to participation. Ultimately, Library-To-Go will extend the Library’s reach, strengthen community connection, and ensure that all residents of Ramara Township have the opportunity to benefit from the resources and programs we offer.

Why is this project important to the community?

Literacy is a cornerstone of personal, social, and economic well-being. Strong literacy skills, developed from early childhood through adulthood, enable individuals to communicate effectively, pursue education and employment opportunities, and actively participate in their communities. Unfortunately, limited access to reading materials and resources can significantly hinder literacy development, particularly in rural or underserved areas.
Early literacy, in particular, has a profound impact on lifelong learning and success. Research from organizations such as Frontier College and the Canadian Children’s Literacy Foundation shows that children who are read to regularly before school are more likely to enter kindergarten with stronger language skills, better attention spans, and greater curiosity about the world around them. The Government of Canada’s Early Learning and Child Care Framework also emphasizes that early literacy lays the foundation for school readiness and long-term educational achievement.
Reading aloud to children builds vocabulary, comprehension, and emotional connection. It helps children develop empathy and imagination while strengthening family and caregiver relationships. Shared reading experiences also create lasting positive associations with books and learning. As children grow, strong reading habits continue to support academic success and personal confidence.
Beyond the individual benefits, literacy strengthens entire communities. Public libraries are often described as “the heart of the community” because they foster connection, learning, and inclusion. When residents of all ages have equitable access to reading materials, they are more likely to engage with local programs, participate in cultural activities, and contribute to community vitality.
By introducing Library-To-Go, we are removing barriers to literacy in a geographically underserved region.
