The project will replace outdated and worn flooring throughout the library to create safer, more hygienic, and versatile space that better support learning, community engagement, and creative programming. New carpet will be installed in the children’s areas and collections spaces, and new durable vinyl flooring will be installed in high-traffic and high-use areas such as staff rooms and the conference room.
The existing carpet in the children’s areas and collections has reached the end of life. Years of heavy use have resulted in stains, visible wear and tear, and areas that are difficult to keep clean. High-traffic zones show compressed and matted fibers, while spots from spills, craft activities, and everyday foot traffic remain despite regular maintenance. These conditions not only detract from the welcoming atmosphere that libraries strive to provide but also present practical challenges for hygiene and accessibility. Many families with young children visit the library. Infants and toddlers spend extended periods sitting, crawling, or playing on the floor. Staff rooms and the conference room, which experience concentrated foot traffic from employees, volunteers, meal prep, and meeting areas, also show wear that reduces durability and ease of maintenance. Beyond physical condition, the current flooring limits the library’s ability to fully realize its role as a dynamic community learning hub. Carpet restricts certain hands-on activities. Messy creative programming—such as painting, or other art-based learning experiences—must be carefully monitored or avoided altogether to prevent further damage. This constrains the range of educational and engagement opportunities the library can offer, particularly for children and families who benefit most from interactive, exploratory learning. This project will Expand the library’s capacity for creative, hands-on, and experiential programming by providing flooring surfaces that can accommodate a wider variety of activities.
