Let’s Meet at the Library: a Community Gathering Space in Portland

What is this project about?

Rideau Lakes Public Library is building a branch in the heart of the rural village of Portland by Big Rideau Lake. This new location will serve as a gathering place for neighbours, families, and friends to meet, relax, play, and learn in a welcoming environment.

Our project provides two very important and distinct spaces within the branch to learn, share, converse, and reflect; a shared community meeting room with audiovisual equipment for presentations and a fireplace gallery for a digital art display.

In the small community meeting room, people can come together to collaborate and dream. These gatherings can be in person, online or in combination as a hybrid meeting thanks to the power of technology. The modular nature of the furnishings allows for flexible meetings that can stay small around one or two tables or expand to up to ten people.
In the main area of the branch, the fireside gallery will be a focal point drawing neighbours, families, and friends together to gather, unwind, view beautiful works of art by local artists, and to share stories and presentations. The warm glow of the fireplace gallery invites conversation and storytelling while the tastefully framed screen can display the work of local artists or slides for an informative presentation.

In rural areas, cultural and learning opportunities can be limited or geographically isolated. Here, under one roof, is the chance to provide artistic experiences along with life-long learning in an inclusive space.

Why is this project important to the community?

Our community has been lacking a social center in Portland to gather at as we have been without a hall and the library has been housed in a rental facility across a busy highway which acts as a barrier. Relocating the Library branch and hall in a new building returns this vital public gathering place to the village, with safe walking routes for seniors, children, families and visitors from the lake.

Coming together after the upheaval of the pandemic is critical to re-energizing and motivating volunteers and community members. The new meeting room space taps into this potential and gives residents a fresh space and the technology tools they need to meet, plan, and collaborate, building capacity in our village and Township.

Our project also seeks to bring the community together to safeguard against social isolation that undermines the mental health of our residents whether they are seniors living alone or youth facing anxiety. These informal spaces, where you do not have to pay anything and can just drop by, are vital for community wellbeing.

As social and health care services are increasingly becoming mobile and online, the library can help residents who struggle with digital literacy to book and attend virtual meetings. We are there for technical support, enabling them to connect to the services they need in a confidential space.

In addition we seek to support local artists, giving them a platform for their work both through the large screen acting as a slow speed, digital art slide show. With a rotating digital art gallery, we can showcase a variety of local artistic talent including children and teens at nearby schools. We will also connect with Indigenous artists and speakers in our area to highlight their work and actively support ongoing efforts towards Truth and Reconciliation.
