Lendery: a library of things expansion

What is this project about?

A Lendery is a library of things – instead of books you can borrow items like tools, kitchen equipment, sporting gear and more. Things you need at the moment but don’t need to own, saving users money, space and time. The Lendery was initiated in partnership with The Regional Municipality of York and is now owned and operated by Vaughan Public Libraries. It is an established program undertaken with Public Libraries to help foster social and cultural change that can lead to waste reduction and increase access to a wider collection for library members.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Lendery at Pierre Berton Resource Library (PBRL) has been a great success. The Lendery is one way we help advance a circular economy. The collection size and usage have steadily increased since opening. As the Lendery, and its popularity have grown, some challenges have also emerged. In particular that items in this special collection are unable to travel through our courier. Community members interested in using these items must borrow and return the items to PBRL. This poses a barrier to some people in Vaughan, who are unable to use it to save money, space, time and the environment. To address this challenge, it is proposed that the Lendery Collection is expanded to the VMC Library. This location was selected for its proximity to condo towers reliant on public transit and geared towards our members with limited storage space.
