What is this project about?
Launchpad 2.0 is modelled after the original Launchpad currently located in Hanover Ontario. It’s a place for youth, post high school, adults and seniors to gather and partake in programming designed to give people the skills they need to launch a career they didn’t know existed.
Currently the original Launchpad location has a computer lab with 3D printer, a welding shop with 6 booths, a full commercial kitchen, a woodworking shop, and a common meeting space. It’s utilized by kids 12-18 trying to find their paths in life. Utilized by young adults picking up new skills, it’s utilized by adults renting the shops, it’s utilized by companies and unions to qualify their employees (welding certificates) etc. The space also is used as a business incubator for entrepreneurs trying new ideas.
Although Launchpad 2.0 in Port Elgin is in the early planning stages, we’re getting tremendous feedback support from employers, Municipal Councillors, educators and community funding groups.
It’s envisioned that the Port Elgin Launchpad will built on the successes of the Hanover facility and add electrical, computer skills, and health sciences skills in addition to the culinary, welding, and wood working programs.
Why is this project important to the community?
In rural Ontario, there is a distinct lack of after school programs and public spaces for young people and an even greater lack of exposure to strong mentors who are eager and willing to share their skills and help youth find their passion and vocational guidance to enter the local workforce.
This space will open opportunities exposure to skills that are no longer available in the public schools.
With the addition of programs for young adults, seniors and, unions/employers the model works towards being self funded, all the white keeping the primary focus on being a Launchpad for our next generation of employees, with the skills, mentorship, and diversions from unhealthy alternative uses for their after school time.
Saugeen Shores (where Port Elgin is located) is the fastest growing community in our region, with a real and present need for a facility that will equip our community to be move to the next level, while keeping our young people moving in the right direction.
Although in the early stages, this project will be gaining momentum very fast, with a hopeful opening for school year 2022/23.
