Kitchen Revitalization at Gateway Community Health Centre

What is this project about?

We are requesting funding to renovate our existing kitchen at Gateway Community Health Centre (GCHC) into a fully equipped commercial kitchen. These essential renovations will include the installation of commercial-grade kitchen appliances, hood fan, dishwasher, and workstations, a walk-in refrigerator and freezer, some storage units, and cookware. This transformation will enable us to expand our capacity to serve the community, offering nutritious meals, hands-on food skills training, and a space for social connection and support.
The renovated kitchen will become a central hub for GCHC’s programs, empowering individuals to gain the skills needed for healthy food preparation, alleviating food insecurity, and fostering a sense of community. We also aim to provide ready-made meals for vulnerable populations, including low-income households, homeless and street-involved individuals, seniors, youth, and children, while also expanding our current food skills programs.

Why is this project important to the community?

This renovation will directly address critical community needs, particularly for those facing economic and social challenges. Our kitchen will be a vital resource for:
-Low-Income Households: Many local families struggle to afford and prepare healthy meals, and the renovated kitchen will provide them with the resources and skills to do so.
- Seniors and Youth: These groups often face specific challenges in accessing or preparing healthy food, and the kitchen will help bridge those gaps.
Furthermore, the kitchen will be used to support other GCHC programs, including playgroups, board meetings, staff meetings, and our annual open house, further promoting community engagement and support
