Ingamo Homes currently offers a community kitchen once per month and is seeking funding to expand it to twice monthly. Ingamo provides transitional housing to women and children who have experienced intimate partner violence and are working toward safety and stability. Currently, 20 adults and 22 children live at Ingamo, many of whom experience ongoing food insecurity and live at or below the poverty line.
Rising food and household costs make it difficult for many families to consistently provide nutritious meals. Community kitchens provide practical, hands-on support through affordable meal preparation, meal planning, budgeting, and food literacy. Sessions are based on resident requests and focus on nutritious, low-cost meals that families can easily recreate at home.
The program also creates opportunities for residents to connect, share knowledge, and reduce isolation. Our food programming relies largely on donations, which limits how frequently we can offer these sessions. Funding would allow us to provide community kitchens twice monthly, strengthening food security and practical skills for women and children while supporting families as they work toward greater independence.
Food insecurity is an ongoing concern for families living at Ingamo Homes, many of whom are living at or below the poverty line while rebuilding their lives after intimate partner violence. Rising food costs make it increasingly difficult for families to afford nutritious meals while also meeting other essential expenses.
Expanding the community kitchen will provide a practical, local response to this need. Women will gain skills in meal planning, budgeting, and preparing affordable, nutritious meals that they can continue using after leaving Ingamo. The program also provides an opportunity for residents to connect, share knowledge, and reduce isolation.
By supporting families with both food and practical skills, this project will strengthen food security, support children's well-being, and help women build greater independence and stability as they transition into permanent housing.
