Harvest Share Community Garden/Education Project

What is this project about?

The outdoor space at Harvest Share’s new permanent location provides an exciting opportunity to establish and maintain a large community garden. Produce grown in the garden will help increase the amount and variety of nutritious food available through our fresh and frozen food hampers. Beyond growing food, we plan to use the garden as a community learning space by offering practical workshops and sharing educational social media content about planting, maintaining, harvesting, preserving and freezing food. This initiative will provide immediate food support while helping community members develop the knowledge and confidence to grow some of their own food and strengthen their long-term food security.

Why is this project important to the community?

A community garden and related workshops would be especially valuable in Parry Sound, where rural and northern residents can face higher food costs, transportation barriers and limited access to affordable fresh produce. The garden would provide locally grown food for Harvest Share’s fresh and frozen hampers while giving community members practical skills in growing, harvesting, preserving and preparing nutritious food. Workshops and educational social media content would extend this knowledge beyond the garden itself, including to people unable to attend in person. The project would also create opportunities for volunteering, reduce social isolation and bring people together around a shared purpose. By combining immediate access to fresh food with education and skill-building, the initiative would support both current needs and greater long-term food security.
