GUM Community Art + Learning Hub will expand a small contemporary art gallery in downtown Meaford into an active, year-round place for creative learning, participation and community connection. Our goal is to turn successful individual arts initiatives into lasting community capacity for Meaford and the surrounding area.
GUM Gallery was created by the not-for-profit organization Meaford Downtown as a welcoming place where people can encounter new ideas, meet artists and experience art in unexpected ways. The gallery already presents exhibitions by local, regional and visiting artists, digital exhibitions, artist talks, community events and local history. This project will allow us to do much more.
With LEAF support, we will equip the gallery to host a wider range of talks, workshops, demonstrations, presentations and hands-on activities. Programming will bring artists and community members together to share knowledge and skills, provide opportunities for emerging artists, involve youth and local schools, and encourage people of different ages and backgrounds to learn from one another.
A central idea behind GUM is that contemporary art should not feel exclusive or intimidating. The gallery is free to visit and shares its premises with a working hair salon, meaning people often encounter an exhibition simply while going about their everyday lives.
The GUM Community Art + Learning Hub will build on that accessibility, creating a flexible cultural space where curiosity is encouraged, skills and ideas are shared, and people can connect through creativity. Our goal is to turn successful individual arts initiatives into lasting community capacity for Meaford and the surrounding area.
