What is this project about?

Technology Access and Community Need
As the Grand Valley community continues to grow, access to reliable technology has become increasingly important. The Grand Valley Public Library serves as a community technology hub, providing free internet, public access computers (PACs), programs, and digital resources to residents of all ages.

The library historically provided nine PACs but currently has only five: one accessible computer and four stations supported by a system in which is approaching end-of-life, the library proposes replacing the four existing stations with six modern public access computers, increasing capacity for residents who lack reliable technology or internet access at home and reducing wait times during busy periods.

Staff and Program Technology
The Program Manager currently uses an aging desktop that also operates the library’s microfiche/microfilm reader. Replacing it with a laptop and docking station would allow staff to work more flexibly while keeping the historical research workstation available to patrons. The laptop could also support programming, outreach, partnerships, and activities throughout the library and community.

Children’s Technology and Early Literacy
The library’s existing AWE Early Literacy Station is nearing the end of its useful life. A second AWE station would provide children with greater access to educational and literacy-focused programs while reducing wait times. An alternative option would be an interactive touch table, creating a collaborative environment where children can learn and play together.

Access to Charging Stations
Many patrons rely on library technology to complete online applications, attend virtual appointments, and communicate with employers and service providers. Charging stations would help users remain connected during longer visits and improve access to essential digital services

Why is this project important to the community?

Together, these investments would strengthen the Grand Valley Public Library’s role as an accessible community technology hub. Expanding public computer access, updating staff technology, supporting early literacy, and providing reliable device charging will help residents—regardless of age, income, or access to technology at home—connect, learn, work, and participate fully in an increasingly digital world.
