GDCI Track Rebuild

What is this project about?

The Goderich District Collegiate track and adjacent basketball and beach volleyball courts originally opened in 1978 after GDCI students and staff, with community support, raised the funds. The track and courts have served the community well but now need significant upgrades. About 20 years ago, the track was resurfaced but now requires a full-scale restoration due to safety concerns. The track restoration and upgrades to the courts will include making all venues as accessible as possible and the total project will cost over $600,000. Our immediate focus, however, is the track itself, which will require approximately $500,000 to complete. Community fundraising events are ongoing to increase awareness and generate funds.

Why is this project important to the community?

The track and the basketball and beach volleyball courts are central to our school and community, providing a safe space for students and residents of all ages to be active, develop skills, and come together. Outside of school hours, our track serves as a safe, accessible space for residents to walk, jog, and exercise, a multi-use facility accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Unlike other sports facilities, a track can accommodate casual walkers, serious runners, seniors, and families simultaneously. Its multipurpose nature means that it is more cost-effective per user than many other sports facilities A well-constructed track is durable and can serve multiple generations. A refurbished track would be a long-term investment in health and wellness for our community. Quality outdoor courts are also proven to be an excellent way to boost community pride and bring the community together. High-quality athletic facilities are a sign of community investment in youth and wellness and would foster pride in local schools and give families more reasons to stay in or move to Goderich. A refurbished track and courts would encourage healthier lifestyles in Goderich as we do not have the same volume of fitness infrastructure that larger cities do.
