FEWD-truck

What is this project about?

We plan to launch a food truck to enable us to serve more food-insecure communities that lack adequate infrastructure to support our takeout meal programs. Through our current program operations, we provide takeout meals in neighbourhoods that have neutral community spaces to serve out of. However this is extremely limiting, as many at-risk communities don’t have these types of spaces. When we first launched in 2022 we were serving in two more neighbourhoods - that really needed the support - but had to stop as there was not an appropriate location to serve out of. In fact many community members and clients have been asking when we are getting a food truck so that we may bring our services to their neighbourhoods. The addition of a food truck will enable us to expand the reach of our takeout dinner program providing convenient and nutritious meals to underserved communities. It will serve a changing menu offered on a sliding scale as a way to;

1. Bring convenient, nutritious, accessible foods to low-income, food-insecure neighbourhoods that are not currently receiving meals from Community FEWD.

2. Bring convenient, accessible foods to Community events

3. Increase catering sales to build more financial sustainability for our food security initiatives - so we are less reliant on grants and fundraising.

4. Support community engagement through volunteerism and build mutually beneficial relationships to foster growth in the circular food economy.

Why is this project important to the community?

There are several needs in the Guelph community that Community FEWD aims to address. The first being improving nutrition, food security and empowering underserved communities. The heart of our program is to reduce the impact of food insecurity, poverty, and hunger, which affect over 6 million Canadians. Our weekly take-out meals are designed to provide nutritionally dense options for all community members, regardless of socioeconomic status or life stage. The second need we address is reducing the environmental impacts of food waste to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community. The Government of Ontario reports that each year, over 2 million tonnes of food and organic waste are sent to landfills. In our three and a half years of operation, our program diverted approximately 25,000 KGs of food that would have otherwise been wasted, and we project this amount to surpass in 2026. One of our core values is to build healthier, more sustainable communities through our program.
