In 2024, Huron County Library launched an exciting pilot project introducing makerspace technologies at our largest branch in Goderich, Ontario. The response from our community has been overwhelmingly positive as residents of all ages have been discovering new ways to learn, create, and connect. Building on the success and lessons learned from this pilot, we are now ready to expand the makerspace initiative to three additional town branches, ensuring that more residents across Huron County can benefit from access to innovative, hands-on learning opportunities.
This next phase of the project will focus on introducing Cricut cutting machines, virtual reality (VR) headsets, and a TV for a gaming system into more of our branches. Cricuts can empower individuals to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and even pursue small business ideas. Library staff will also integrate the Cricuts into a variety of programs designed to foster creativity, encourage digital literacy, and promote lifelong learning.
Virtual reality (VR) provides immersive, educational, and accessible learning experiences for patrons of all ages. VR can help to bridge the digital divide by offering access to technology that many people, especially in a rural or underserved area, wouldn’t otherwise experience. It also attracts teens and young adults through interactive gaming and creative programs.
Expanding makerspace access aligns with Huron County Library’s commitment to innovation, inclusion, and community engagement. By extending this technology to additional branches, we aim to bridge the digital divide that often affects rural communities, ensuring that residents have equitable access to the tools and training that support creative expression, personal growth, and economic opportunity.
