Expanding Access for Indigenous & Vulnerable Youth

What is this project about?

The Cobourg Saxons RFC is committed to building a stronger, more inclusive rugby community in Northumberland County. This project seeks to increase participation among Indigenous and vulnerable youth by removing barriers to entry, fostering cultural connection, and providing a safe, supportive environment where young people can thrive through sport.

We will create dedicated outreach programs, offer subsidized registration and equipment, and establish partnerships with local Indigenous and vulnerable communities and organizations to build meaningful, lasting relationships.

This initiative goes beyond rugby—it’s about leadership, cultural exchange, and resilience, empowering Indigenous and vulnerable youth while uniting our community through sport and shared values.

Why is this project important to the community?

Rugby has always been more than just a sport for Cobourg—it’s been a bridge between people, families, and generations. Our club has built a reputation for producing exceptional athletes, including national team and professional players, but our greatest success lies in building strong young men and women who carry those lessons into every part of their lives.

However, there remains a glaring gap in access and opportunity for Indigenous and vulnerable youth in our region. Many face barriers—financial, logistical, and cultural—that prevent them from participating in team sports. These barriers lead to missed opportunities for connection, mentorship, and personal growth.

This initiative will break down those barriers and create a space where Indigenous and vulnerable youth are not just welcomed, but celebrated and empowered. By making rugby accessible, we are offering far more than physical activity—we are giving young people:

• A safe place to belong where they are part of a supportive team that values their identity and culture.
• Role models and mentors who help guide them through challenges both on and off the field.
• Life skills like resilience, leadership, and teamwork that translate into academic, personal, and future career success.
• A bridge between communities, fostering understanding, respect, and reconciliation through shared experiences and partnerships.
