Equip the London Children’s Museum’s Discovery Lab

What is this project about?

The London Children’s Museum is seeking support from the Commonwell LEAF Fund to help fill our new maker space, the Discovery Lab, with more tools for hands-on learning. The Discovery Lab is an innovative new space where children and families can experiment, build, and create using real tools and technology. Through self-directed exploration and facilitated workshops, participants learn about a variety of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) concepts in an exciting and age-appropriate way.

This project in partnership with Commonwell will support the specialized equipment, tools, and materials needed to bring this engaging new space to life. Their funding will allow the London Children’s Museum to inspire innovation through the purchase of technologies like 3D printers and programmable robots, build early construction-related skills with new table saws and power tools, and unleash creativity using sewing machines and laser engravers. These resources will transform the Discovery Lab into a dynamic and state-of-the-art space for facilitated drop-in activities, workshop series, collaborative community projects, school programs, and special guest features.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Discovery Lab was created in direct response to the need for more STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) programs and skilled trades learning experiences designed for children of diverse ages, abilities, and interests. This space is an engaging environment where children can safely explore real tools, discover talents, and imagine future possibilities. Purchasing new equipment for the Discovery Lab will increase families’ access to programs that foster problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity—critical skills that empower children to grow into confident, community-engaged adults.

Despite living in a world increasingly shaped by technology and innovation, many families have limited opportunities to engage with real tools and technology. These resources, often unavailable at home or in schools due to cost, are crucially needed to provide children with hands-on experience using real world equipment, and the confidence to use them safely. Further, studies show that when children engage with authentic objects and materials, their interests in STEAM-related fields and skilled trades deepen immensely.

Support from the LEAF Fund will play an essential part in helping us bring these materials to children in our community. By investing in the Discovery Lab, we are all investing in children’s futures—helping them grow as creative thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers who are ready to shape a better, more connected world.
