Enhancing Community Learning Spaces

What is this project about?

The Cobalt Public Library seeks funding to modernize and enhance its public spaces through the purchase of new furniture, privacy computer desks, and maker space equipment and supplies. These upgrades will transform the library into a more welcoming, functional, and inclusive environment that supports digital literacy, creativity, and community engagement.

Our current furniture is outdated, and the lack of private computer workstations limits patrons’ ability to access online services confidentially. By adding ergonomic seating, flexible tables, and individual computer pods, we will improve accessibility and comfort for all users. The addition of maker space tools—such as a 3D printer, crafting tools, and STEM kits—will inspire hands-on learning and attract new users, particularly youth and families.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Cobalt Public Library serves a diverse community, including seniors, job seekers, students, and families. Many patrons rely on the library’s public computers for essential online services such as job applications, government forms, and virtual learning. However, the lack of privacy and outdated workstations makes this difficult and discourages use.

Our furniture is over 10 years old and no longer meets accessibility or ergonomic standards. Additionally, our limited program space restricts our ability to offer creative and STEM-based learning opportunities that are becoming standard in modern libraries.

Investing in updated furniture and a maker space will make the library more inclusive, adaptable, and responsive to community needs.
