Engaging Seniors as Volunteers in their Communities

What is this project about?

This project is about recruiting seniors to be volunteers and mentors to other volunteers with clients and their families who are in need in our community. Our goal is to have volunteers for any client who needs someone to sit with them in their home and to provide respite for the caregivers. There is an intensive 6 week training program and volunteers are paired with senior volunteers who have been volunteering for awhile to provide the new volunteers with shadowing and support.

Why is this project important to the community?

This project is important to our community to keep seniors engaged in their community and to support community members living with progressive life threatening illnesses to remain in their homes for as long as they would like and/or is safe for them to do so. It is also important because it provides support and respite to the clients family members enabling for them to continue to care for their loved ones at home without burning out. In the rural area we are often short of medical assistance even if the client is entitled to a certain number of hours per week. Our volunteers make it possible for the caregivers to continue the care in the home.
