Crooked Seams

What is this project about?

Crooked Seams is a rural community arts initiative led by Keshia Putnam of Tom & Lotte Studio and Caley Vandervelt of Cales Van, dedicated to transforming Yarker into a vibrant hub for creativity, learning, and connection. In a village with few community spaces and limited opportunities for accessible creative activities, our project will establish a welcoming venue where residents of all ages can participate in hands-on arts and crafts, develop new skills, and build meaningful relationships.

Support from the Commonwell L.E.A.F. Grant will be transformative for our project. The funding will enable us to offer regular free and subsidized programming, reach underserved groups, and remove financial barriers to participation. It will also allow us to expand to a larger space to accommodate bigger groups and an even wider range of creative opportunities for the community.

With the Commonwell L.E.A.F. Grant, Crooked Seams will foster creativity, connection, and opportunity for all, building a stronger, more vibrant Yarker.

Why is this project important to the community?

Our core goal is to offer low cost classes and creative experiences, making the arts accessible to everyone in our community. We are especially committed to providing regular free kids’ classes, ensuring that children in Yarker and surrounding rural areas have opportunities for creative learning regardless of family income. Additional programming will include pottery and upcycling workshops, seasonal craft classes, pop-up markets, and mobile art van experiences that bring creativity directly to local events and neighborhoods.
