Critical Infrastructure Replacement for Curling Ice Making System

What is this project about?

The Maitland Granite Curling & Recreation Club is undertaking a proactive upgrade of critical components in its aging ice-making system to ensure safe, consistent ice conditions for future curling seasons. While the building itself remains in solid condition, our current refrigeration system is nearing the end of its operational lifespan. The risk of an unexpected failure is growing, which could abruptly halt league play, youth programs, and other community events.

By replacing the most vulnerable parts of the system now, we aim to prevent a costly, disruptive breakdown. This investment will ensure uninterrupted access to curling—a cherished local tradition—and secure the club’s long-term sustainability as a recreational and social hub for the community.

Why is this project important to the community?

Curling clubs across the region are struggling to survive, largely due to rising utility costs and the financial burden of aging infrastructure. We’ve already seen the loss of a nearby club whose members could not afford to replace their failing ice plant—a reality we are determined to avoid in our own community.

The Maitland Granite Curling & Recreation Club serves as more than just a sports facility—it’s a space where people of all ages come together. Curling is uniquely inclusive, allowing multi-generational play and fostering intergenerational relationships. Beyond the game itself, curling culture emphasizes social connection. After each match, teams gather together, building friendships and a strong sense of community.

Weekly league play doesn’t just offer physical activity—it also helps combat isolation by providing a consistent social outlet for participants. Preserving this space means preserving community wellness, connection, and local heritage.
