Creative Commons – Placemaking at Kemptville Campus

What is this project about?

Creative Commons is a community-engaged placemaking project at Kemptville Campus that will activate underused industrial and outdoor spaces through collaborative art-making and small infrastructure upgrades. Led by artists and created with community participation, the project will include painting picnic tables, murals, and intersection paintings, alongside placemaking activities such as banners, pop-up art/flower pots, and installations. The grant will also support a small refit of an existing building — a large former agricultural storage shed – adding water access, finishes for indoor activities, and an outdoor platform that will serve as a flexible stage and gathering space. The project culminates in a celebratory public event with performances, unveiling of the artworks, and a festival atmosphere that welcomes the whole community.

Why is this project important to the community?

Kemptville Campus is a large and historic site with tremendous potential as a community hub, but much of its space is underused. This project will make the area safe, welcoming, and inclusive by combining creative arts activation with modest infrastructure upgrades. By transforming overlooked areas into vibrant gathering places, the project will attract more community use, foster intergenerational and cross-cultural connection, and set the stage for future creative endeavours and projects.
