Creating Culturally Relevant Learning Spaces to Ensure Youth Thrive

What is this project about?

Camino Wellbeing is part of a regional collaborative of 10 community organizations providing barrier-free, culturally relevant tutoring and mentorship to vulnerable children and youth across Waterloo Region. The initiative aims to strengthen academic success, prevent social isolation, and increase belonging.

Supported by volunteers, tutoring is delivered in community-based spaces close to where youth live. The initiative focuses on underserved youth, including Indigenous, Black, racialized, newcomer, and low-income youth who may face economic, cultural, language, and systemic barriers.

Through tutoring and mentorship in safe, culturally responsive spaces, youth receive academic and social support from caring adults and peers. Last year, the Collaborative delivered approximately 1,000 hours of tutoring.

Why is this project important to the community?

Many vulnerable children and youth in Waterloo Region face barriers that can make it harder to succeed in school, including financial pressures, language and cultural barriers, and systemic inequities. This initiative brings barrier-free tutoring and mentorship into trusted community spaces close to where youth live.

Along with academic support, young people build relationships with caring adults and peers, strengthen their confidence, and feel more connected to their community. Supporting youth early can help prevent school disengagement and social isolation while creating stronger pathways to graduation, further education, employment, and community participation.
