Creating Accessible Facilities for Rural Learning and Wellness at Roots Farm & Retreat

What is this project about?

This project completes the accessibility upgrades connecting the new geodesic dome—funded through a $50 000 McConnell Foundation grant—to the rest of the site. Construction includes:
-an accessible indoor washroom for public use;
-a small utility room housing the water and pump systems;
-2 entrance wheelchair ramps for the entrances to the new washroom and dome
-solar pathway lighting for safe evening access; and
-bilingual way-finding signage to guide all visitors.
These improvements make the property fully barrier-free and safe for evening use, enabling year-round workshops, retreats, and learning activities for residents across Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry.

Why is this project important to the community?

Many SDG residents lack spaces that are both accessible and culturally safe. Elders, newcomers, and 2SLGBTQI+ neighbours often stay home because rural venues don’t meet their needs. This project changes that by creating a barrier-free gathering place where people can participate fully in bilingual workshops and wellness events close to home—restoring dignity, safety, and a shared sense of belonging.
