Courtyard and Accessibility Enhancement Project

What is this project about?

The Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH) is seeking support to enhance accessibility and
create a more welcoming environment through upgrades to our courtyard and back entrances.
As a central gathering space for art, history, and community connection, OMAH welcomes
visitors of all ages and abilities—from young children attending art camps to seniors
participating in workshops and tours. However, our aging entryways and courtyard areas
present barriers that limit full participation. By installing accessible door systems and
reimagining our courtyard as a safe, inclusive, and inviting space, we can ensure that
everyone—regardless of mobility or ability—can enter, engage, and belong. This project is not
only an upgrade to our building but a vital investment in accessibility, dignity, and inclusion for
the entire Orillia community.

Why is this project important to the community?

Accessibility is at the heart of community connection. As Orillia continues to grow as a creative
and inclusive city, it’s essential that public spaces like OMAH reflect those values. The museum
is more than a building—it’s a gathering place where people of all ages, abilities, and
backgrounds come together to learn, create, and share stories. When barriers exist, whether
physical or social, members of our community can feel excluded or discouraged from
participating. By improving our entrances and courtyard, we’re not just enhancing the
appearance of our heritage building; we’re ensuring that every person—whether a child in a
stroller, a senior using a mobility aid, or a visitor with accessibility needs—can enter comfortably
and feel that they belong. This project will strengthen community pride, foster inclusion, and
make OMAH a truly welcoming space for everyone in Orillia.
