Connected Communities: SDG Library’s Public Computer Renewal Project

What is this project about?

The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County Library (SDG Library) is seeking funding to replace and upgrade forty-one (41) public access computers located across its 15 branches. These computers are an essential service point for residents who rely on the Library for internet access, digital literacy, and community connection.
Many of the current computers are nearing or beyond their expected lifespan, resulting in slower performance, compatibility issues, and increased maintenance costs. The proposed project will replace these outdated units with modern, energy-efficient computers capable of supporting up-to-date software, accessibility features, and high-speed connectivity.
The project includes:
• Purchasing and installing 41 new desktop computers with current operating systems and productivity software.
• Ensuring each station is equipped with assistive technology to improve accessibility for users with disabilities.
• Providing a consistent and reliable user experience across all branch locations.
• Recycling or responsibly disposing of outdated hardware.
This upgrade will ensure that all community members—regardless of income, age, or location—continue to have free, equitable access to essential digital tools and resources through the Library.

Why is this project important to the community?

Access to reliable technology is a lifeline in the SDG Counties, where many residents live in rural or underserved areas with limited access to affordable high-speed internet or up-to-date computer equipment.
The Library’s public computers are used daily by residents to:
• Search for jobs and prepare resumes,
• Access government services, complete online forms, and file taxes,
• Participate in online learning and virtual training,
• Connect with family and friends through digital communication tools,
• Access health and social services, and
• Support students who may not have a device or internet connection at home.
In 2024 alone, the SDG Library recorded over 100,000 in-person visits and nearly 8,000 hours of public computer usage. The Library’s role as a digital access point is growing, not shrinking. However, aging computers limit what residents can do and create barriers to learning and participation.
Upgrading the SDG Library’s 41 public access computers directly supports the Library’s mission to connect communities through innovative services, literacy resources, independent learning, creative expression, leisure, and civic engagement. Reliable, up-to-date technology ensures that residents across all 15 branches can access essential digital tools for education, employment, communication, and creativity. These computers enable individuals to learn new skills, access government and social services, explore personal interests, and engage more fully in civic life. By modernizing this technology, the Library strengthens digital inclusion, enhances accessibility, and continues to provide equitable opportunities for connection and lifelong learning throughout SDG Counties.
In short, this project will ensure that every resident—regardless of where they live or their personal resources—has the opportunity to participate fully in the digital world.
