Community Kitchen

What is this project about?

The Whitney Seniors New Outlook is a community charity focused on provision of social and recreational opportunities for the community of South Algonquin, particularly aimed at seniors. The organization and volunteers operate activities out of their location almost daily throughout the year, including free meals for the community, card games, darts, BBQs and other socially-focused activities. The organization struggles with its current kitchen facilities which are small, scattered throughout the space, and do not meet public health standards. Although we do the best we can with what we have, the current state of the kitchen limits our ability to efficiently provide maximum services to our community. This project will update the major appliances in the community kitchen to meet public health standards and provide more refrigeration and counter space, and proper cleaning, which will allow the organization to comply with public health regulations and serve more people in the community in a safe manner.

Why is this project important to the community?

Our remote rural community is an hour from the nearest larger centre and several hours from an urban population. Many residents are seniors on fixed incomes, living with age-related disabilities, and unable to drive or easily access out-of-town services. With no local food bank and few organized recreation options, the Whitney Seniors New Outlook provides a welcoming, safe place for seniors and people of all ages to share meals and activities. Some events draw more than 100 people, and the kitchen is stretched to its limits when capacity is needed most. Some of the equipment is approaching or past its normal lifespan and if it fails, the meal programs are at risk of being discontinued entirely. This would be a huge loss to our community.
