Community Food Hub & Learning Initiative

What is this project about?

Spiritual Hospital has been providing food support to individuals, seniors and families in our community for many years. Through this work, we have seen the growing pressure that the cost of food is placing on households. The Community Food Hub & Learning Initiative will help us strengthen the work we are already doing by improving how we receive, store and distribute donated and rescued food. We also want to help people make better use of the food they receive through simple nutrition information, food preparation and food-safety education. Volunteers will be an important part of the project, helping with food rescue, sorting, packing and distribution. The goal is not only to give out food, but to reduce food waste, share useful knowledge and bring people together to help meet a growing need in the community.

Why is this project important to the community?

The cost of food continues to place pressure on many of the individuals and families we serve. Through our food distribution program, we see people who are working, seniors on fixed incomes, newcomers and families who are struggling to keep enough food in their homes. At the same time, good food is often available for rescue but organizations like ours need the proper capacity to receive, store and distribute it safely. This project will help us strengthen what we are already doing, rescue more usable food, reduce waste and provide practical food and nutrition information. It will also give volunteers an opportunity to be part of the solution in their own community.
