Clar-Mill Hall Storage Room Renovation

What is this project about?

Located in Plevna Ontario, the Clar-Mill Community Hall, which is owned and maintained by the Township of North Frontenac is a central hub for community activities throughout the year. With its central location, capacity, open space, stage, sound system, and commercial style kitchen, it has become a popular venue. In 2023/24, the Hall’s commercial kitchen underwent an upgrade to its cabinets, flooring and sinks. It was long overdue. However, the adjacent backroom storage area, which is accessed through the kitchen, was left untouched. This proposed project is to redesign and renovate the storage room. This room provides extra capacity for appliances, which enable groups, including CMCV, to store food safely and at appropriate temperatures. It also provides storage for kitchen supplies such as containers, paper products and decorations. Also, Rural Frontenac Community Services uses the space to store toys, games, and supplies for their EarlyON/Seniors program. CMCV volunteer members adhere to health and safety standards and are certified Ontario Food Handlers. Members recognize that the current state of the backroom is inadequate and not compliant with standards. Shelves and supplies are open and prone to mouse infestations; flooring is bare plywood and hard to keep clean; and the many user groups of the Hall have a hard time ensuring that their allocated and designated space is effectively utilized. Supplies and large chairs are stacked haphazardly, sometimes blocking access to needed supplies, and often posing a health and safety risk. CMCV members have made efforts to clean, declutter and reorganize the space. CMCV and stakeholders recognize that more permanent improvements are needed.

Why is this project important to the community?

The members of our community take great pride in our Hall and its facilities. A renovation of the backroom will add to that feeling of pride. It will provide groups with an organized space that improves food handling and storage processes. It will also provide new energy efficient appliances to store food in advance of events, enabling groups to take advantage of sale prices as they arise. The storage area is hard to keep clean, despite best efforts. Products are often disposed of due to rodent infestations. New flooring and closed cabinets will help alleviate that issue. With the potential to reduce operating and food costs, more of the money raised by CMCV can be donated to local organizations and charitable groups. It enables CMCV to expand benefits beyond those who attend and enjoy CMCV events. The whole community benefits.
