Children’s Museum

What is this project about?

The Museum on Tower Hill is seeking support to launch a "Children's Museum," a weekly initiative that temporarily transforms our permanent gallery into a dynamic, hands-on space designed specifically for pre-school children and their families.
While our museum is celebrated for preserving West Parry Sound’s rich history, we recognize a critical community need: a safe, and accessible indoor environment where early learners can play, socialize, and discover. Once a week, we will activate our gallery space with interactive learning stations, including a train table, an engineering gear table, and a curated range of STEM-inspired toys.
This project bridges local heritage with modern early childhood education. By manipulating gears and guiding trains, children will intuitively learn about their surrounding environment, regional industry, and foundational science concepts. More importantly, the Children's Museum provides local parents, grandparents, and caregivers with an affordable, welcoming, and weather-proof hub to connect with one another while fostering a lifelong love for learning and local history in their children.
With funding from the Commonwell L.E.A.F. Initiative, we will purchase high-quality, durable educational assets, ensuring this program remains a sustainable, safe, and joyful community fixture for years to come.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Children's Museum initiative addresses critical gaps in the West Parry Sound District by tackling geographical isolation, a lack of weather-resilient family infrastructure, and limited early childhood development resources.
First, our community experiences long, harsh northern winters and unpredictable seasonal weather. During these months, local families face a lack of safe, affordable, and accessible indoor spaces for young children. By converting our permanent gallery into a weekly hands-on learning hub, the Museum on Tower Hill creates a predictable, warm, and welcoming sanctuary. It gives parents, and grandparents a vital space to build supportive social networks, reducing parental isolation in a rural region.
Second, the project provides equitable access to early STEM education. High-quality, tactile learning tools, like gear tables and interactive STEM toys, are often financially out of reach for individual households. This program democratizes access to foundational science, technology, engineering, and math concepts during a child's most critical developmental years.
Finally, the Children's Museum redefines the museum's role in community sustainability. By introducing local history through play, such as navigating a train table, we are anchoring our youngest citizens to their environment and heritage. This early exposure instills a sense of regional pride and belonging from preschool age.
