A large makerspace can address an important social need by creating opportunities for people to learn and create together. Shared projects and workshops encourage interaction among people of different ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience.
Many community members are interested in learning practical, creative, and technical skills but lack access to the equipment, space, or financial resources required to do so.
A makerspace can remove barriers by providing shared access to equipment. Patrons can experiment, learn through hands-on experience, and develop new skills. The makerspace can support workshops as well as independent learning.
The accompanying Library of Things would extend this access beyond the library building by allowing residents to borrow useful items they may need only occasionally. Examples include tools, technology, recreation equipment, educational kits, and home-improvement equipment.
A Library of Things can contribute to more sustainable patterns of consumption by encouraging borrowing and sharing rather than requiring every household to purchase infrequently used items.
