Bridges to Technology: Robotics for Rural Students

What is this project about?

This project will create a community based robotics program that gives students in Grey Highlands access to hands on STEM learning opportunities that support future skills. Many rural students do not currently have regular access to robotics, coding, and technology enrichment activities, so this program will fill that gap by working directly with local schools and youth groups.

The library will purchase robotics kits and technology that can be used in structured programs for K to 8 students, high school students, and homeschool learners. Our staff will collaborate with Beavercrest Community School, Macphail Memorial Elementary School, Grey Highlands Secondary School, and local homeschooling families to deliver workshops, clubs, and curriculum connected activities. The program will also be available to youth through the public library so that learning can continue outside the classroom.

By introducing robotics in a supportive and inclusive environment, we aim to build problem solving skills, boost confidence in STEM subjects, and inspire interest in future education and careers in technology and skilled trades. This project will help ensure that rural students have the same opportunities to explore innovation and emerging technologies as students in larger urban centres.

Why is this project important to the community?

This project is important because students in rural communities often have limited access to advanced technology learning opportunities. Robotics programs can be costly for schools to launch and maintain, which means many students in Grey Highlands may not have the chance to explore STEM learning beyond the standard curriculum. By providing shared equipment and trained program staff, the library can help bridge this gap and ensure a more equal level of access for all students, including homeschool learners who may have even fewer resources available to them.

Our community relies on future skilled workers in technology, healthcare, trades, and innovation based industries. Offering early exposure to robotics and coding helps young people discover new interests and build confidence in problem solving, teamwork, and creative thinking. These are skills that support academic success and are essential in the modern workforce.

This project also strengthens collaboration across the community. By connecting the public library with local schools, youth, and families, we can create a supportive learning network that helps students thrive. Investing in robotics today supports long term resilience and growth for Grey Highlands by giving our youth the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
